Jon and Harald,
I'd like to encourage one or both of you to continue investigating what it'd
take to use compilers other than VC to build the native Win32 version.
Although all of our existing Win32 developers are happily using VC, I'm
willing to bet that you're not the only ones who find that an obstacle.
Patches to allow AbiWord to be built with more compilers are always welcome,
and there's probably not much need to debate the merits of, say, the bcc32
vs. mingw compilers.
If you've got time and energy to get AbiWord building with your favorite
compiler, go for it! The more the merrier.
