FYI.
AbiWord currently does not have an equation editor, and there are no plans
to add one as part of the 1.0 release. However, there have been a number of
developers on this list who've begun thinking through various design
alternatives.
Seeing as how I just got private email from yet another developer who might
be interested in helping implement this feature, I went ahead and extracted

I don't necessarily expect anyone to start diving into this right away, but
I wanted to make sure that anyone interested in diving into this feature:
(a) is up to speed on the design discussions to date, and
(b) knows who else to be coordinating with to avoid duplication of effort.
I suspect there's enough work involved here that it shouldn't be too hard to
find good ways to divide it into sharable chunks. :-)
