OK I've tried this. On a debug build on my PII 400, I see no obvious
scrolling speedup. If I hold down "downarrow" abi still gets behind the
downarrow key presses.

However now inserting page numbers on multi-page documents causing abi to
hang. Going text over one page with page numbers crashes abi.

You might have missed some code in the handling of header/footers.
