In terms of doing dynamic (on the fly) smart quote replacement, the
original implementation of such was one on the Mac in the mid 1980's
(85/86) by a good friend of mine named Dave Dunham.
At the time he "open sourced" both his code and the algorithm for
doing so, and I just got him to provide me with a copy of it, which I
have enclosed. Although not Int'l savvy, it does show the logic
involved and I hope it will help the work for AbiWord.
