I'm pretty sure you didn't miss any files.  

Could you add this line

                         UT_DEBUGMSG(("word: %s\n", theWord));

to line 228 of ap_Dialog_Spell.cpp and see what the output is when you run
the Spelling dialog?

Are you running XFree86 4.0[.0,.1] or 3.3.6?

On my system, the nightly build from 10/9 works, and 10/10 doesn't.
