This could be nicely represented with xml:lang in some portion of the 
.abw document, as xml:lang takes as legal value all the country codes
we use.  This mechanism, with a little inheritance intelligence, would
do nicely to later implement languages for smaller portions of the 
document, as Bill suggests. 

On a more general note, the idea of clicking a German button and getting
proper spell checking would be cool beyond belief.  I can think of a 
number of people who would use this feature that are current MS Word 
types (provided we got pspell to work on windows).
