In an attempt to spur on more study of a bug I've been tracking I've added
a couple of asserts into the code.

Added assert to help flush out a problem with a document having a NULL
character width string pointer.
Removed some newlines from the UT_DEBUGMSG string since we already
print out a newline and it will make the output faster.
