Just do: gpg --encrypt file.abw

Works like a charm.

No extra fussle to abiword.
Make it a FAQ option, for instance.

Q: How to I protect my documents?
A: Instead of implementing a broken process (like some other word processors) we
advise to use the ALREADY available protection tools like gpg.
All you have to do is gpg --encrypt document.abw to protect it. Use gpg --decrypt
document.abw to decrypt it.
