You are correct that AbiWord does not have tables at this time. The AbiWord developers have talked about it more than once, but are planning to take their time and get it right the first time (as much as possible). Tables are not planned until after the 1.0 release (at this time). Lists can be nested within each other, but, to my knowledge, an equivalent to the HTML definition list is not implemented.
