In GTK+-2.0, you can do this as Ctrl-Shift-[Unicode char code number]. Apparently this is an iso standard somewhere, too. Additionally, it has a pretty sophisticated input method mechanism that can be used by the application, if it wants. Just a data point, -Jonathan
