This sounds to me like a Linux/X font issue. I
understand that "non-western" fonts need to be created
but I don't know the exact procedure. It also sounds
like the substitute character, the degree symbol, is
playing a part. This is the code which puts a
character in the place of a) characters missing from
your font and b) zero-width characters. So getting
the correct 8859-2 font created should fix your
problem
unless of course it doesn't create the "double acute"
characters needed in which case you will need to get
better fonts.
I hope somebody familiar with central European fonts
on
Linux/X can give you more specific help. I think this
problem does not exist on the Windows version.
