in my previous mail i pointed out that using an external program for
crypto was wiser, so i know its a bad idea.

At the back of my mind is the idea that a program or office suite that is
required to support several compression formats may as well be tweaked to
provide me with the engine i need to extract (or even compress) any
archives,
perhaps by adding an option to the shell context menu...  (right click choose extract
etc ...)

of course on *nix this is not as useful as windows which is shipped without so much as 
a command line zip
program.
