It is intuitive as long as it works in almost all (if not all) x applications. _except_ in apps that badly support c&p. It should not clear the clipboard just because it lost the selection. I think that any app in x, unless told otherwise, copies on select but I might be wrong. Abiword does that, but it should only touch the clipboard again on another act of copy (selection, C-c, C-x, etc..) and not as the selection is lost when it pastes.
