I can do part of 1 by making jpeglib use an option. Since most Linux distro and GNOME comes with libjpeg, it is no big deal. Will add ABI_OPT_JPEGLIB for Makefiles and --with-jpeglib for autoconf (with possible setting this automatically if available). Hub
