Do you forgot unixfont ?
gmake[2]: Leaving directory `/users/mgansser/GNU/abiword-0.99.5/abi/src/wp'
- unixfonts not found
'make canonical' and 'make install' require the unixfonts/ package be
available as a peer to the abi/ tree.
