We are never going to agree on this so my arguing is pointless. But now is the time to decided yes we do need seperate keybinding schemes. It was mentioned to me by a Wordperfect user that there are one or two keybindings they would much prefer to have but that mostly they are okay with the current setup. (If anyone has full documentation of all the keybindings of a reasonably current version of Wordperfect please could you send me a copy. I will also need to grab a copy of the various bits in the help section on Microsoft Word keybindings.) Even if keybindings were fully customisable it would still be good to have mulitple preset schemes. request for Customisable Keybindings/shortcuts http://bugzilla.abisource.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1247 strange that i never added any comments to this bug, i guess ignored it because it was so linux specific. It would also be nice to be able to use the Vi & emacs keybindings without the need to edit Abiword.Profile. I will file a bug requesting a GUI for switching keybinding schemes. If we were to reenable F12 as a shortcut for switching keybindings it would be essential to pop up some sort of a dialog or other BLATANTLY CLEAR WARNING. The last thing we want is a poor user trapped in emacs keybindings, it is difficult* enough for most people try to get out of Overwrite mode and switch back to Insert mode (* easy when you know how, but completely non-obvious otherwise). > important than consistency across platforms. People using AbiWord on Differnt people have differnt priorities. There are more potential users than there are existing users and your approach makes a lot of sense but we can have it both ways and i would like as much as possible to use the same settings for Abiword no matter what platform i am running it on. As an open source project Abiword is not as much constrained by market forces as it is by time and developer resources. I think we can have a our cake and eat it too. I just want to give massive thanks to the original devlopers who had the foresight to make different keybinding schemes sorted out. > Either the list of bugzilla is fine. I find it easiest to mention stuff on list then file a bug report and include a link to the post in the mailing list archive. I just want to be careful not to fall into a discussion about opinions rather than facts as seems to happen all too often with usability. It is great that we have the Gnome HIG to help us keep thinks rational and senisble. (not implying anything, i am as likely as the next guy to mistake what is best for me as the best answer). Sincerely Alan H.
