I think this was discussed on the HIG at one point or another. It's generally preferred. In fact, it's already implemented in many of the basic applications (including GEdit, as I learned oh-so-recently). However, I can also understand why someone may want the text cursor to remain, so as to return quickly to a specific place--particularly useful in large documents. Maybe a "bookmarker" like feature can be implemented sometime around "AbiWord VI: The Undiscovered Coder"...or sooner.
