compile problem

I just used CVS to get the HEAD version, but I can't compile it (Linux/GTK2).
It appears that some Makefiles have been built with @FREETYPE_CFLAGS@
not converted into something useful, so I get 
        c++: @FREETYPE_CFLAGS@: No such file or directory

I expect this is a minor problem, easily addressed.  But I don't know how
to do it myself.
