That is almost exactly what i suggested in the previously mentioned bug report. most importantly i inlcuded a tickbox Dont ask me again [] which i had hoped would be enought to offset the fact that some advanced users do intentionally use overwrite mode and would find the interupption annoying. Allegedly the latest versions of ms office have a non blocking warning message that will go away after a given time if you ignore it. To respond to Tomas, great minds think alike Joaquin Ceunca Abela suggest pretty much the same thing (on another list). It is a good idea but i would not recommend making the cursor red, it should probably be the same colour as the selection colour (or perhaps the inverse, i would need to ask someone who knew about accessibility and colour schemes).
