Hope you don't mind, I'm taking this on-list.  No.  That is what I
originally suggested to mr. muon.  This also includes test code, the
stuff inside *_TEST checks.  Like:

#ifdef PT_TEST
        some_volatile_new_endnote_backend_fnc();
#endif
