Sounds like you're just trying to run it from a different user id than the one that is currently authorized with the X server. For example, if you su'd to root in order to do the install and then accidently tried to run from that root shell window. Although root can do almost anything, it cannot normally connect to someone else's X server by default.

Just go into a shell ("terminal") window that you can start other X clients from (I often try xlogo to check) and start abiword from there. You could use 'xhost +', but that's probably a bad idea if your computer is connected to the Internet.

Tried several times to install abisuite-0.7.12.i386.rpm onto my SuSE 6.2
system. I got messages telling me it needed a newer version of glib and
gtk+. I tracked them down from their web site and installed them in the
order recommended.
I then tried installing abisuite. It gives the following message:
xset: unable to open display ""
 gtk WARNING **:cannot open display
glib and gtk+ were installed via yast; I tried installing Abisuite via
command line rpm and yast. No joy.
Any suggestions?

Please bear in mind when offering suggestions that I am rather a newbie
at this... I'm still figuring out sybolic links.
