I got the rpm versions (with and without the "gnome" in the name)
working by upgrading my gnome using helix (now ximian). I also had to
put in a symlink for libgal.so.2 -> libgal.so.3.0.1 since helix gave me
the latter. My only problem is that spell checking doesn't work:
$ abiword
SpellCheckInit: Pspell error: I'm sorry I can't find any sutable word
lists for the language-tag "en".
Still haven't figured out how to solve that one.
