vertical lines between characters

Hi,
I have recently installed abiword on 3 computers at a school, on two of the 
computers it works fine, on the third, a vertical line appears between each 
character, this disappears if you alter the view in any way but returns for 
the next characters typed. All computers are the same and have identical, 
fresh SuSE 7.0 installations. The vertical lines only exist on-screen. The 
Abiword version is preview release 0.7.
How do I resolve this problem ?
