There's some sort of incompatibility going on between abiword, glib, and
passwords on your system. (e.g. maybe you're using PAM but glib wasn't
compiled with PAM support.)
You said you tried the static binary? Have you tried the dynamic one?
You might also try installing from source (cd abi;make;make install).
Also, what about upgrading glib?
