National characters in AbiWord (Linux)

I've just found AbiWord (0.7.13, 0.7.12, etc.) to draw 
question marks instead of national (Russian) symbols 
under Linux. It seems like it is using its own list of 
fonts. So, I'm interested in doing something with that 
(Redhat 6.1 and gtk based Abi build).
