More on this problem:  I opened aw and went straight to Page Setup.  Changed page size 
to A4 and clicked OK.  This time it wasn't trying to do any reformatting so I was able 
to see a symptom - it started to repaint the ruler at the left...and then overwrote 
it...and overwrote that...ad infinitum until the ruler bar became Harris 
Tweed...eventually solid black...until aw hung completely.

I have the latest binary download of aw, which identifies itself only as "0.7.14".

I think this is going to be a showstopper for me.  There is no such paper size here as 
"Letter".
