Just out of curiosity, are you running a pspell-enabled build? This sounds an
awful lot like some error messages I encountered when I was initially coding the
AbiWord pspell version.

How to know?

1) Insert->Field->Application->Build Options
2) Save a sample document, and open it using emacs

You should see either a Pspell:On or Pspell:Off in either case. Tell me what you
see.
