Michael,
I tried this with my Windows ME system and experienced no problem,
Created two .rtf files, one with AbiWord and one with Wordpad; saved them on
the desktop..
I found I could open each of them via the right click and "open with", then
"abiword" selection.
Maybe this isn't a bug in AbiWord, but something to do with your system?
