Load "type1"
to one or both of two files. I don't know whether the /etc/X11/XF86Config file needs the addition, but there are no "load" instructions anywhere in that file. However, the file, /etc/X111/XF86Config-4, has such lines. Where to add the line, though, I'm uncertain. I tried adding it in the "Module" section, with the other Load lines, but that didn't help. I didn't want to mess around with that file, which handles all the X configuration.
So, I followed the secondary recommendation instead. As root, I ran the command,
chkfontpath -a /usr/share/AbiSuite/fonts
which adds that fonts path to the list of font dirs in the file, /etc/X11/fs/config. If you'll check that file after running the command, you'll see the new .../AbiSuite/fonts dir in there. (You can remove a dir from that list using -r instead of -a.)
I hope that helps.

Hello, I recently upgraded AbiWord via Ximian Red Carpet, and am now getting a font error.I checked here ( http://www.abiword.com/support/faq/ ) and found a "solution".
- "AbiWord could not load [-*-Times New Roman-...]"
- If you recieve the message "AbiWord could not load the following font or fontset from the X Window System display server, [-*-Times New Roman-regular-r-*-*-*-0-*-*-*-*-*-*]" or something similar try the following, add the line load "type1" to your /etc/X11/XF86Config or XF86Config-4 file. (You will need to do this as root.)
- You may also want to try the following command if you still have problems
/usr/sbin/chkfontpath -a /usr/share/AbiSuite/fonts. Again, you will need to do this as root. Check the AbiSuite directory path as it may have been changed by the packager depending of the distribution.Unfortunately, the directions are a little too vague for this newbie Linux user.
How exactly would I go about entering the line: load "type1" into the Xf86Config file? It would be extremely helpful if there were a link to a step-by-step example of how this may be done.
Thank you.
