There is a solution (thanks dom for clarifying)
you need to edit your Abiword.Profile in unix that is in ~/.Abisuite/Abiword.Profile in windows it is in C:\windows\Profiles\Application Data\Abisuite\Abiword.Profile (or something very close to that, i dont have windows in front of me right at this minute) the Abiword.Profile may contain several different profiles you must make absolutely sure that you change scheme name _custom_ if it does not work then thats probably what has gone wrong. you need to add the line DefaultSaveFormat=".txt" I hope that answers your question.
