Ah.  I didn't *intentionally* do so; I configured as follows:

./configure --prefix=/opt/AbiWord --enable-extra-optimization 
--enable-scripting --with-libpng-prefix=/usr

Is --enable-debug actually the default, and do I need to explicitly
configure with --disable-debug?
