have you seen what Oeone did with Abiword? hardly a mention of Abiword on their site last time i looked.
they put made abiword into some sort of a Mozilla component type thingy. I think this might be something along the lines of what you are considering. Hopefullyly some of their work can eventually be incorporated back into the main version of abiword.
