Unicode Fonts

Can someone suggest how to support UTF8 fonts in AbiWord?
Looking att he its fonts directory suggests that it only seems to support 
Type1 fonts (are the font metric essential?), can anyone suggest iso10646 
or at least Hebrew and Arabic font solutions?
