There is a feature request in Bugzilla for Equation Editing. I could not geuss when it might be implemeted. It is definately something the developers would have some interest in.
LaTeX is a really good system tho' so dont give up on it just because of installation problmes. I know StarOffice and OpenOffice also do equation editing, and im sure KDE must have something in that area.
