Abiword has support for docbook xml import and export. there has not been much work done on it recently but there was some discussion on the developer mailing list and hopefully some one will do a little work on it soon. Encouragement and/or sponsorship might get you the features you want sooner. there is current a minor problem that (may have been fixed in the past few weeks) if you try and import a dockbook file that contains images.
