Hi Keith,
This sounds very much like a mis-configured
X-server. Somewhere there is a setting that prevents non-root users from
modifying their font path. I suggest you ask on Mandrake forum or
somewhere like it. If you get it to work, please email how you achieved it
and we'll post it on a FAQ somewhere.
