OK, tired the chmod -w fonts.dir and rebooted.  File still missing when 
the system comes back up.  (Fortunatly I don't reboot all that often, 
this would be a killer problem in windows.)

You mentioned that Red Hat knows about this.  When the fix is done, can 
it be announced in the list?  Thanks!
