Hi,
Just as a side note which might explain why it works for some and not for others.
I had no sound using awesome WM. Even by fiddling around with alsamixer.
Every now and then I heard cracking noise from the speaker that's all.
Log-out and log-in again selecting Gnome Unity as WM and I was greeted by the welcome sound... strange. Speaker worked fine. The volume control worked but the increments were a bit to big (maybe 5-6 levels in total only).

1. The relogin did some magic I'm unaware of.
2. There is something starting with Gnome Unity but not with Awesome which is required to play sound.

Both would be a subject for a fix...

Thus, people who have problems might need to mention there Desktop WM beside of the used Kernel. If we get some more combinations we might be able to draw a conclusion out of that.
Maybe some of the Ubuntu-Gurus could check into this too.

Does anyone have working headphones (via the jack) using the latest
