This may be related to a known problem (bugzilla #1949), where client
systems running python2.7 (Ubuntu 11.04, Fedora 14) have no jabber or
media services when connected to the ANL venue server. It _may_ be
that even when connected a different venue server that nevertheless
"uses" the ANL server for jabber connection, then the media services
will work OK but jabber is broken in the way you describe.
Could I suggest (to help confirm the diagnosis) that you first
_restart_ your 11.04 venue client and then connect to the APAG venue
server (which runs its own jabber server) at:
https://vv3.ap-accessgrid.org:8000/Venues/default
