I'd recommend checking the VenueClient.log file for an indication of the problem. You will see plenty of information in the log file that is not relevant to your problem, but you should also see some entries related to your problem; you can try searching for the error string you mentioned. It's possible that the problem will be clear (e.g., unresolvable host); if not, you can send the log for me to look at.
We've been trying to give the user more meaningful error messages to facilitate fixing problems like these. I'd be interested to know which version of the software you're using, and the exact text of the error message.
