I'm well aware of that. My point is that, according to the text I quoted from the IA2 spec, the IA2 active state basically maps to aria-activedescendant *right now*. The IA2 active state in its *currently documented form* cannot be used for aria-current without changing the spec, which obviously requires consultation with all stakeholders. The alternative is to implement a new state.
