Hi Kiran, I strongly support your view. I had made this observation long back that we must avoid congratulatory and thanks giving messages on the list. It definitely makes more sense to post such messages directly to the person and spare the list the unnecessary traffic.

Of course, if you want to start a discussion or ask for clarification on the said message or topic, you can always do that. But please avoid messages just to congratulate. Recently, there was a message about someone in Bombay (can't remember her name) topping in her college. And there were at least 7 similar messages congratulating her on her achievement.
