Hi Kiran, I strongly support your view. I had made this observation long
back that we must avoid congratulatory and thanks giving messages on the
list. It definitely makes more sense to post such messages directly to the
person and spare the list the unnecessary traffic.

Aaruni.

Subject: [AI] Sending congratulatory messages

Dear members,

Lot of us know that the traffic on the list has increased greatly. Hence
I feel that we should follow a procedure to deal with congratulatory
messages.

1. When an article or news about an achievement is posted on the list,
it is not necessary for everyone to congratulate. Please check if anyone
has already congratulated the person in question before posting your
message.

2. Of course, if you want to start a discussion or ask for clarification
on the said message or topic, you can always do that. But please avoid
messages just to congratulate.

Recently, there was a message about someone in Bombay (can't remember
her name) topping in her college. And there were at least 7 similar
messages congratulating her on her achievement. And that person is not
even on the list. It is fine to ask what her course is and all those
details but please avoid just congratulatory messages.

Thanks,
Kiran Kaja.
