I just tried the speech synthesiser from scanSoft again. Last time I had the
opportunity to program it with a scanning and reading device, but then I
could not share the experience as I did not know the url in order to make it
available for everyone to try it. I was just looking at the website for
thunder screen reader, and waw! there I got the link to download a 15 day
trial version of Daniel from ScanSoft. It is a british english synthesiser,
and it is almost real voice. at times it is difficult to know if it is some
human voice or synthesised one. Although there are some glitches such as
stuttering as if there is less memory. but I feel that word stress is very
good. Earlier synthesisers could change tones based on punctuation, but this
one seems to be doing without them. I once tried by removing all
punctuations, and even then it worked wonderfully. I am not able to use it
all the time, may be it is my old habit with eloquence, or something else,
but still I would like Daniel to read poems or stories for me. Another point
is that I am also adjusted to eloquence to figure out spelling mistakes,
which I guess will take sometime for me to adopt to Daniel. or may be this
technology needs some more improvements. It works with jaws qquite well,
with small performance issue, but if you want to read books, then just push
insert plus down arrow and have the fun.
