When you are in the insert mode, the character you type gets inserted
between other characters. On the other hand, when the overwrite mode is
active, the character you type replaces or overwrite the other character.
For example, tyep 'bg' in a document. Then, place your cursor on G, then
type I. Since we have the insert mode active by default, you will find that
the character I has got inserted between b and g and has formed the word
Big.
Now press control alt I which will activate the overtype mode. Perform the
same task. What you will find now is that the Character I, instead of
inserting itself in between, has replaced the character G. Consequently, you
will find that only BI have remained.
This is the whole difference. You can decide which mode suits you best while
editing a document. If the insert mode suits you, then it is active by
default, press the key stroke if you want to switch to the other mode.

Viraj.
