Here are the possible answers:

1. You can add address through the add contact option in the "actions" menu
in Windows messenger. If you are using the newer version, such as windows
live messenger, there is a separate menu where you will find this option.
2. There e-mail ID does matter when you are adding them in windows
messenger. Only those who have a hotmail ID or an ID configured with
Microsoft can chat in the windows messenger. If you are using windows live,
however, you can chat even with those who are using Yahoo Messenger version
8, but even for this there are some configuration steps which I don't
remember exactly.
3. This could mean that they are asking you to sign in Yahoo Messenger with
your Yahoo acount.
4. It too is a program for IM and internet telephony. Works with a google or

a GMail account.
5. I could not understand exactly what you mean by edit box in Windows
messenger. In a sense, the window where you are reading the message itself
is an edit box because you can type your message and press enter to send it.

Regards.
