This is with reference to the MS word problem I am sharing with the list. One
of my sighted friends suggested a way and it partially worked, so I'm
forwarding it here. It is now clear that the problem is because of the "left to
right" language thing. Following the steps suggested here, now my cursor is not
moving opposite as it would do earlier whenever I would select the next word or
line or paragraph. The part of the problem that still persists is that the
selection is still going opposite way, that is, I select the next word and the
previous gets selected and so on and, by corollary, the default left to right
option in the paragraph dialogue box automaticaly shifts to the other way
round. .

Hi Viraj,

I searched a lot but couldn't really find any specific option that controls
text direction in my Word setup. Of course, the fact that I have Office 2007
may have something to do with it.

While going through Word's online help however, I found this:

Set insertion point behavior for right-to-left text

The feature described in this Help topic is only available if support for a
right-to-left language, such as Arabic, is enabled through Microsoft Office
Language Settings.

In addition, you must be running a Microsoft Windows operating system that has
right-to-left support - for example, Microsoft Windows 2000 or XP.

On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Complex Scripts tab.

Under Cursor Control, do one of the following:

To have the insertion point move according to the logical order of mixed text,
click Logical.

To have the insertion point ignore text direction and move continuously to the
right or left, click Visual.

I think you might have to select the Visual option, but that's in case you have
the Complex Scripts tab in the first place under Tools / Options.

In case this doesn't work then we'll have to figure something else out.

- Abhishek
