Subject: [Blindmath] LaTeX or Nemeth?

This is probably a good time to point out that I'm just announcing the alpha
test of my free BackNem backtranslator which backtranslates Nemeth text and
math to MathML. (BackNem is a command line backtranslator written in Java
and should work on any OS.) There are also at least four separate commercial
organizations in the US that are working on similar capabilities.

Here are the links to instructions for participating in the BackNem alpha
test and to samples of the output.

MathML can be displayed automatically by the FireFox browser or by Internet
Explorer with the free MathPlayer plugin installed. You can use FireVox or
MathPlayer to proofread the math via text-to-speech. Sighted persons who
use FireFox should check out this page which compares the FireFox rendering
of math with that of LaTeX. (I find the FireFox rendering at least equally
attractive.) http://www.mozilla.org/projects/mathml/demo/texvsmml.xhtml

MathML can also be converted to LaTeX.

While I think that it can be useful to be familiar with LaTeX, it is much
more important for braille users to be able to read, write, and understand
math in braille. I hope that the availability of accurate Nemeth
backtranslators will be of value to braille-using students as far as
improving their mathematical abilities.

Backtranslation also provides an independent check on automated forward
translation done by sighted transcribers who don't know Nemeth.
