Anyone from that school or university on the lists? could you update more? http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/agra/Ahmadi-School-students-refused-cell-phones-run-riot/articleshow/49065661.cms ALIGARH: Visually challenged students of Ahmadi School, which is run by the Aligarh Muslim University, went on a rampage late Monday, protesting the ban on the use of mobile phones within the campus. Angry students damaged school property. School wardens were taken aback by the sudden burst of violence.
Vice Chancellor Lt Gen Zameer Uddin Shah of Aligarh Muslim University declared a vacation in the school until September 27. Students have been asked to stay home until after Eid-ul-Adha. AMU spokesperson Rahat Abrar said, "Following protests by students that they were not allowed to use mobile phones, the administration has asked boarding students to proceed home for Eid." Although it was reported that the students had entered into a scuffle with wardens, the principal of the school, Firdaus Rahman, said, "There was no scuffle, no manhandling. Students started shouting and banging on doors when the electricity supply went off. The resident warden tried to control them, but the kids went on a rampage, breaking the door and window panes and damaging furniture. The computer in the warden's room was damaged and important documents were torn." The principal said the anger was surprising, and the students could have done themselves harm. AMU spokesman Abrar said, "Students had demanded access to mobile phones, and the liberty to frequent markets. The administration will look into some other demands too. They will be allowed to use the gymnasium and swimming pool in the university campus. Mobile phones will be allowed, but their use will be restricted as they will remain in the possession of the resident warden." -- Avinash Shahi Doctoral student at Centre for Law and Governance JNU Register at the dedicated AccessIndia list for discussing accessibility of mobile phones / Tabs on: http://mail.accessindia.org.in/mailman/listinfo/mobile.accessindia_accessindia.org.in Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/ To unsubscribe send a message to [email protected] with the subject unsubscribe.
