TNN | Nov 21, 2015, 08.59 AM IST

BENGALURU: Harshit Kumar, Stalin A, Akshay Tao and Shivaram Subbhaiah,
techies with SAP Labs, Bengaluru, put their heads together. The bee in
their bonnet was a visually-impaired colleague. "Her courage and spirit got
us working on a technology that would be of use to the whole world of
people with disabilities," says Harshit.

The result: An app that will help vi sually and hearing impaired people
access what is happening around them and people around through audio and
text messages.

The four techies unveiled their Inclusion App at the two-dayIndia Inclusion
Summit 2015 that got underway on Friday. The summit is a community driven
initiative that brings together thought leaders to deliberate, discuss and
take forward diverse talents available in society. It's supported by the
government of India, ANZ, Allegis, EnAble India and SAP SE.

The app helps people with disabilities to network with NGOs and those who
can help them explore opportunities to put their talents to use. For now,
the app will display the networking facility only to those participating in
the two-day event.

"Beyond being touched by personal encounters with physicallyand
mentally-challenged people, we were enthused about doing something for
them. We did not know that we were developing this app for the event but VR
Ferose, senior VP of SAP Labs and founder of the summit, decided to
leverage this for a larger target group," says Akshay .

Union minister of social justice and empowerment, Thawar C Gehlot announced
that the New Sugamya Bharat scheme will be augmented on December 3. Under
this scheme, 50 cities will choose 100 buildings each to build
disabled-friendly infrastructure. The minister also said a new policy for
the disabled people will be tabled in Parliament. The policy will identify
19 disorders to define disability as against 7 included in the present law.

The summit also launched the EnAble India Academy that intends to train
people with disabilities. The Bengaluru NGO is focusing on starting their
initiative with this city.
