Loveability isn’t just your average matchmaking app. It’s the first
matchmaking mobile app focusing on people with disabilities, health
disorders and special needs. The brainchild of Kalyani Khona, Shankar
Srinivasan and Lina Piedrahita, the idea stemmed from a matrimonial
website they were working on in 2014.”With that initial project we
managed to reach 150 people and that’s when we realised what a big
difference we were making,” says Kalyani.

A few successful stories and Kalyani decided not to look back. “To
widen our audience base and ensure everyone is provided with equal
opportunities to find love, we decided to move to a mobile app
platform,” she says. Given the amount of disabled people across the
country who are looking for a life partner, this smart, energetic app
could be the elusive answer they are looking for.

Kalyani makes it clear that she is a ‘businesswoman’ and the reason
they’re doing this is because there is high demand in the market.
“Forty per cent of our investors are people who use it, clearly shows
the demand that exists for the app,” says Kalyani. “Internationally,
there exists no mobile app which caters to matchmaking and dating
needs for people with disability, which is why we are so much in
demand,” she adds.

But this pioneering app was not a easy project. For the visually
impaired, who formed a huge section of their users, the team needed to
create viable alternative to pictures for other blind users to check
out, “12 million people with visual impairment in India miss out. But
we have screen readers and talk-back technology, which allows users to
listen to the text with the help of speech synthesizers,” says
Kalyani.

With six months of research before launching the app, the team was
able to address many other challenges. “Matchmaking among people
facing disorders happens more on an intellectual level than a physical
one. Thus, we intend to focus more on details such as medication,
possibility of cure, level of independence, instruments used rather
than horoscopes, caste, religion or only pictures,” explains Kalyani.

Looking ahead, the team is now looking forward to doing some research
on neural disabilities like dyslexia, to attempt to build a customised
interface for them to find love.

Live, Love, learn!

The app is accessible to people with disabilities and matches people
on the basis cure availability, medical condition, level of
independence and lifestyle choices.

In the trial version for 150 users in October, the app gained a
success rate of 90 per cent
